Portugal

The collective commitment to sustainable and family-driven wine production, coupled with the region’s rich history and unique terroir, makes Terras de Sicó an extraordinary gem within Portugal’s wine culture.

Located in the heart of Portugal, the picturesque region of Terras de Sicó encompasses six distinct municipalities, nestled around the stunning Serra de Sicó massif. Terras de Sicó is not only renowned for its natural beauty but also for its significant contribution to the viticultural landscape of Portugal.

At the heart of Terras de Sicó lies the Beiras wine subregion, celebrated for its commitment to preserving time-honored production techniques and traditional oenological practices, as well as those authorized by legal standards. This commitment to tradition is a testament to the region’s rich winemaking history, dating back to the Roman Empire.

The challenges for the Terras de Sicó region extend beyond wine production, encompassing a commitment to becoming a sustainable hub that addresses several critical challenges, including rural development, an aging population, and the pressing implications of climate change on agricultural practices. This comprehensive vision reaches every aspect of the value chain, involving producers, associations, distributors, sellers, and consumers in a collective effort to drive positive change. In this context, the Cities2030 project, serves as a focal point for propelling sustainability within the region’s wine industry, providing innovative tools to realize such a vision successfully, offering the local wine production stakeholders, tailored decision support systems that cater to their unique needs.

Through data-driven insights and streamlined operations, the wine industry in Terras de Sicó can minimize waste, embracing the principles of a circular economy, and mitigate the effects of climate change on the vineyards.

Cities2030 partner organization participating in the Wine@Sicò CRFS Lab is Primelayer LDA (PRIM, P37) a spin-off from the University of Coimbra recently focused on the research and development of decision support platforms in the areas of civil protection, road infrastructure, and forest management.
