Connecting capacity building programmes to transform food systems

Wednesday, November 4, 2020

Funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme (ID: 101000640), Cities2030 has been working tirelessly to co-create resilient and sustainable food systems in alignment with the EU’s FOOD2030 policy. Among its innovative deliverables, capacity-building programmes D4.1 and D5.1 have emerged as key contributors to this mission, focusing on skills development and stakeholder engagement.

An exciting synergy has been established with IAAD’s NutriWorks!, a programme started under the ERASMUS+ project BSPORT+ (REF. 613508-EPP-1-2019-1-ES-SPO-SCP), and evolving until 2023. NutriWorks! serves as a participative governance framework tailored to place-based needs, integrating nutritious meal plans, Health Enhancing Physical Activities (HEPA), and a co-action methodology that includes all key stakeholders. This alignment allows NutriWorks! to amplify the impact of Cities2030’s capacity-building objectives, fostering healthier lifestyles and greater awareness in schools and local communities.

NutriWorks! in action. The programme focuses on creating healthier school environments, promoting nutrition literacy, and enhancing physical activity, via dedicated events. It actively engages pupils, teachers, parents, and policymakers to co-develop inclusive, versatile solutions. Building on lessons learned from the BSPORT+ project, NutriWorks! connects its activities with Cities2030’s objectives by incorporating participatory governance, system thinking, and innovative methodologies like the Circular Cities and Regions Initiative (CCRI).

Creating synergies for maximum impact. The collaboration exemplifies how educational initiatives can bridge gaps across multiple sectors. Through shared methodologies, NutriWorks! ensures that Cities2030’s outcomes are enriched with practical, community-driven solutions. These programmes collectively provide a roadmap for sustainable, scalable interventions that align food systems transformation with broader societal goals.

By leveraging its strengths and building on NutriWorks!’ proven success and Cities2030’s framework, IAAD is poised to create long-lasting, meaningful changes in food systems across Europe.
